New makeup releases mean new products to test! Mascara is perhaps my favourite makeup product so of course, as soon as Maybelline released their Falsies Surreal mascara, I had to get my hands on it to really put it to the test.
I’d been seeing this mascara all over my social media and with such rave reviews I needed to give it a try myself. This mascara is said to extend your lashes to create a false lash effect with ‘+36% more length and 10x the volume’ and give up to a 24-hour wear. So, let’s put it to the test shall we and see if this social media sensation really lives up to it’s claims.

The mascara’s brush design deserves additional praise for its ability to provide precise application. The bristles are thoughtfully arranged to reach every lash, including the shorter ones in the corners, making the eyes look more open and defined.
So, without further ado, it’s time to jump into testing the mascara!
First impressions
I’m a sucker for packaging and honestly, the Surreal mascara tube doesn’t fill me with excitement, but it does the job. For a drugstore mascara the look is as expected, a plastic tube that holds the product – nothing to write home about but completely inoffensive.
The wand however, is the part of the product I’m most interested in. This mascara boasts a wand with dense bristles but is still fairly thin in width, which means it packs product on to each and every lash, making your lashes look both lengthen and volumised. When using the mascara I also found it was thin enough that applying the product to my lashes was a breeze. I could even get to the tiny lashes near the corner of my eye with ease, which is something that is not always possible with a larger bristled brush. I’m a big fan of this wand type, which is important when choosing your perfect mascara.
Testing the Maybelline New York Falsies Surreal Mascara
The formula of the mascara is slightly wet which makes it easy to apply without creating clumps, but this means it does tend to get a little messy, this slightly thinner consistency could be due to the lash caring oils included in the formula. Personally, this isn’t something I mind as it’s an easy fix to clean it up but, if you like a formula that’s a little thicker then this one might not be for you.
The plus of the thinner formula means it coats the lashes easily and it still dries down quickly, so far I haven’t noticed any drastic smudging after a day’s wear which is a big pro from this mascara. As for the 24-hour wear claims, I can’t say I’ve ever worn this mascara for that length of time, but it certainly stays on my lashes for 12 hours without making dark smudges around the eyes.
I would say that this mascara has more lengthening capabilities than volumising. I have fairly straight lashes but when curled and this mascara is applied, they definitely look noticeably longer, potentially even +36% as claimed.
Now, my one quibble with this mascara is it’s apparent buildable formula. Yes, two, maybe three coats and it looks fantastic but anymore and we boarder on spider leg territory. If you like to layer up your mascara then this one can get a little clumpy, but the good news is it only takes a couple of coats to lengthen your lashes perfectly.
Final thoughts
All in all, I think it’s a great drugstore mascara and for just £11.99 you can’t really complain. Is it ground-breaking? Probably not, but if you’re in the market for a new affordable mascara then the Maybelline Surreal mascara is one I’d recommend trying out.
The Falsies Surreal may be the newest in Maybelline’s catalogue of mascaras but there are also plenty of other great Maybelline mascaras that work just as well as this one. Two of my notable favourites are the Sky High Mascara and the Lash Sensational Mascara – both work just as well as this one and are frequently interchangeable stables in my makeup bag. These three lash product all create pretty similar looks, so, if the new Surreal mascara is sold out these are two other great options.
