Testing La Mer’s Crème de la Mer

If you’re looking for an honest review of the highly rated and extremely expensive moisturising cream La Mer’s Crème de la Mer then you’ve found yourself in the right place. So, without further ado, let’s get testing to see if this celebrity favourite is really worth the big bucks!

Before we get into the nitty gritty of testing I have to admit, I didn’t actually go and buy this moisturiser myself (have you seen the price tag?!) Instead, I was lucky enough to get a free sample of the cream when buying other beauty products and decided that this was the perfect opportunity to see if this internet sensation is actually worth spending your hard-earned cash on.

What makes the La Mer Crème de la Mer cream so unique?

Before testing La Mer’s Crème de la Mer, let’s begin by talking about what makes the La Mer moisturiser so well regarded by the beauty community. For the pretty substantial price I was eager to find out what all the fuss is about and excited to dig into the smooth crème in my mini pot.

The La Mer Crème de la Mer moisturising cream has a rich history. First discovered by aerospace physicist La Mer himself, this cream was miraculously formed while experimenting with ingredients to initially heal burns. Which instead turned into the soothing, moisturising product that we know today.

So, what’s the secret ingredient that makes this cream so incredible I hear you ask? Well, apparently it’s the addition of sea kelp and many other pure ingredients such as minerals and vitamins that make up what Le Mer refers to as the ‘Miracle Broth’. It all seems very mystical to me, but hey if it works – it works!

The entire history of La Mer is pretty complex, but if you are intrigued in finding out about Le Mer Crème de la Mer then a simple browse on google will give you all the answers. For now, lets get back to what everyone really wants to know, is this really a miracle cream?

Let’s talk price

If you haven’t already seen the price, then prepare yourself now! Coming in at £78 for the smallest 15ml size at Look Fantastic this moisturiser makes for one of the most expensive moisturisers available, but you can’t put a price on beauty right?

If you’re looking to purchase the largest size of 500ml it will be setting you back a whopping £1780! That kind of price tag seems nothing short of astounding to me but hey, if this product gives me a whole new, radiant complexion then maybe it’s worth it. If that kind of price is way beyond your means than no need to worry because *spoiler alert* this product doesn’t need to be your holy grail. There are many other good moisturisers available that sit within a much lower price category and although it is probably the best moisturiser I’ve tried it doesn’t necessarily live up to £78 worth.

First impressions

I’d like to start by saying how adorable the mini La Mer crème de la Mer was. It’s overall look was exactly the same as the usual sized pots, just smaller and who doesn’t love a mini sized product?! Considering my sample pot only seemed pretty small, it lasted well – two and a half weeks of daily use (sometimes day and night) to be exact which is much longer than your regular one or two use sample products.

Its consistency is thick, with a little going a long way so, if you were to purchase the smallest (and cheapest) 15ml size you’d likely be stocked up for at least six months or potentially more depending on how sparingly you apply.

It may not be for everyone but I personally enjoyed the thick texture, it felt detectable on my face for some time after application but for me, I like the feeling of lingering hydration after applying a moisturiser. Right after the first application my skin felt brighter and instantly hydrated. I love the look of a naturally radiant, glowing skin and the La Mer moisturiser definitely ticked that box and to top it off it also smells incredible. As you can tell, after my first test my thoughts were pretty much ‘oh dear now I’m going to have to splurge in this incredibly expensive moisturiser.’

After two weeks testing

I have to admit the initial astonishment from this product did wear off eventually. Other than the obvious, super-nourished skin feeling I felt even after the first application, I didn’t really notice any other showstopping improvements to my skin. After two weeks of use I thought there may be more mind-blowing effects but honestly I was somewhat underwhelmed.

Whether a more prolonged use of the crème would leave me astonished by it’s capabilities I’m not sure, but the lack of anything other that soft skin made me question if this product is really worth the price. If I’m spending £78 plus pounds on a product, I needed a little more oomph.

However, this product does claim to help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by smoothing out the skin. Although after my two-week wear, I didn’t see a massive improvement in this it is potentially something that could eventually happen. Those with aged skin may find the La Mer Crème de la Mer to be even more beneficial to them than just tackling dry patches.

Final Thoughts

If the price doesn’t put you off then this moisturiser is a sure investment and if I could justify the price tag myself I would probably look at purchasing it properly, just for the satisfaction of owning such a desirable product.

My skin felt deeply nourished afterwards and as someone who suffers with outbreaks of annoyingly dry skin, I’ve been looking for a moisturiser that instantly injects a whole lot of moisture into my dull skin.

If you’re looking for ultimate luxury and envy those A-lister beauty regimes, then give testing La Mer’s Crème de la Mer a go, it may just be the product to add to your must have list. While you can certainly find other creams that do a great job at moisturising there is no doubt that this cream feels like the ultimate self-indulgent splurge.

All in all, I probably won’t be purchasing the La Mer cream again myself; the towering price of this product doesn’t necessarily match the creams true capabilities. Perhaps I’m the fool to expect miracles from a £78 cream, but quite frankly, that’s the illusion La Mer presents when talking about this moisturiser. It set my hopes way too high and unfortunately these were just not fully met. Instead, I hope that I can get my hands on another mini freebie to try.
